The struggle with 3DS Max

I'd be interested to know which tools do you think make 3DS Max so much better in Archviz than C4D or other Apps... if we disregard Plugins for now.

Well, I will not open a C4D to Max competition here :).

For me the stacking of modifires, effectors and modeling steps are a big plus. but yes if you remove all the plugins from MAX, that is another story.

But something was in the last years different, specifically in Architecture Visualisation. The output from 3DSMax looked better than the output from Cinema 4D. I don't know what it was. It's the way how 3DSMax and the render engines handels materials, shaders and light. they was a differents compare to Cinema 4D. Now this days Corona Render for C4D is identical with Corona for MAX. This was not the case some time ago. I talk about Archviz. Even today if you compare Cinema 4D outputs and MAX outputs, they are different. and as I sad I don't know what it is.

But here is the main point. Cinema 4D is a allround 3D Software. you can do everything with Cinema 4D. 3DSMax is limitet in some parts ( Motion Graphics) but it is speziallzed in Architecture Visualisation, Film and Games. So Max is more focused on parts of the industry and can improve that tools that are needed for this parts.

Btw: I switched from 3DSMax back to Cinema 4D at home 🙂

Thanks for the reply.

But I can't help but question the difference in image output with C4D and Max if you use Corona for both. They are the exact same render engine, so if anything it's probably some default tonemapping or color profile that is applied. But I doubt it, since I've used both with Corona and I did not see a difference at all.

I've tried 3DS Max 2021 last week and I gotta say... windows open faster now. I don't have to wait two to three seconds for render settings and material editor to open up, but if you compare it to the instantaneous response you get from C4D it's still a joke.

Long term max and c4d user here. I prefer max's modelling tools and modifier stack, and viewport performance, and plugins like tyflow. And I like c4d for its UI cleanliness (apart from the uv workflow which was always terrible) and for mograph. The vanilla renderer is pretty useless so you need a third party one, whereas max has Arnold built in these days.

Never mind all that though, the one thing max has had since the 90s (and AE for that matter) which I really wish they would put in C4d is one simple render checkbox : Skip existing files!

You can render files in a range that maybe are missing, corrupted, or render a few test ranges, to be filled in later etc. It's so useful. And we're up to version 23 and it's still not in c4d.

What about stability and bugs? Is that improved?

One thing people need to keep in mind, is that different parts of the world have taken different paths. It may very well be that you're in industry X, and all your friends use the same software in industry X, but jump over to europe, Japan, China, south america and you may suddenly find you're a fish out of water and very few people use the same software you do.

We work at Raumgleiter 100% with 3DSMax. currently we work with 3DSMax 2020 and we will update to 2021 in the summer break, during the small downtime of client work. I must say that the stability has improved a lot and getting better slowly. They are the typical Max bugs yes. Sometime MAX just get closed without any error. On a Network or via remote 3DSMax can become a bit laggy. 3DSMax 2021 has more improvement.

Interesting, because at my current workplace we do not use 2020 specifically because it's so trash. Slower than 2019, crashes more often, etc.

I switched from Lightwave to Cinema 4d about a year ago. And despite some initial confusion I must commend C4d for how easy it was to get started.

And whenever I get frustrated I just open Zbrush for a few minutes. After that, all other programs seem extremely user friendly and logical.

😁 Indeed. Zbrush is the one 3d app that I have never been able to get along with. But I do appreciate its functionality.

@anuser Did you seriously just register to post that? That's some dedication, respect!

The issue is that, as far as I can tell, the layer system is really damn basic and weird to use. The layer window also does some weird stuff from time to time.

Don't know about basic, but as far as I remember, you can assign multiple layers to one object and as far as I know, there is no way to do that in Cinema 4D. In C4D there is a one layer per object limit. Sure, layers can be nested, but this one layer limit gets to me.

Also, instancing of stuff is done better in 3ds max. If you want to create a single tag object that is used by multiple pieces of geometry, there is really no way to do that. You'd need to create multiple tags and tie them to each other in weird ways via expresso or to some master user data set (or a python script), so a change in one affects the others.

man i feel your pain. every now and then i hear about amazing things about some new software, so i decide to learn it. and just come crawling back to cinema :))

and some of the things are just so unexpected. like the FOV thing in max.

In maya they only recently got a text tool..

Blender doesn't have groups for objects.. like you can't group a bunch of objects into a null and then copy that null somewhere else..

love my cinema :))
