Cloning onto connected matrix objects?

Ive just noticed an issue with that approach, if you add a random effector to the cloner you can suddenly see many more clones than there should be. Four times as many in the simplified file below.

I cant see a work around for that whilst staying as a matrix. you have the option to convert them to cloners using the Swap Cloner/Matrix option.
