Anybody tried Rokoko smartsuit on C4D?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, im considering buying a Rokoko Smartsuit and wanna see if anyone here tried it with C4D and how was your experience. Do you recommend it? was it good for weight transfer and mocap? Difficult to understand/problematic? How was the quality of mocap captured from the suit?

Thanks!

@AlexisB yeah, the prices for helmet mounts are ridiculous!! I have no idea why - I guess because there just isn't very much demand and it's super specialized? the chest mount we sell can work, and so

Rokoko creative director here, so obviously biased - but works well! you can also book a 1:1 demo with someone from our team and they can show you the suit in action (head to our site and you'll get a

Well, I doubt people here used it much due the the price tag. I think it would be best to check YT and see if there is some good information on it. I dont see any videos on the site, so its hard to say, but even if there is, that would be their own marketing which can often be misleading.

I'm only using the Noitom suit, which has the same working principle, but isn't the same company of course.

And whats the experience, is it worth it? What about the price?

Hi, I have been using a Rokoko Suit and the gloves recently, and if you know a bit about how to clean up MoCap data (e.g. with MotionBuilder filters) it is absolutely amazing what you can achieve with the suit.

The retargeting in C4D is currently a bit tedious - at least if you want to work with the nonlinear MotionSystem - , but apparently they are releasing Rokoko Studio 2.0 soon and I heard that you will be able to retarget inside of Rokoko Studio then, which will be a great help.

Don't expect every motion to come out 100 percent perfect from the recording, but with a bit of cleanup (I am talking 5 to 10 minutes) I didn't have a single move that I couldn't do nicely with the suit. You really want to apply a bit of smoothing to the curves (butterworth and smoothing filters) as by default the data can be a bit jiggly.

But with the amount of exposure Rokoko is getting recently and them expanding their offices this year, I expect that more filter options will be developed in Rokoko Studio itself, so it is easier for people who don't know MoCap so well to use the suit.

I was a bit sceptical at first because of the intense marketing and the quality of the MoCap in their demo reel (I don't know who decided to put these jaggy animations in there), but I can honestly tell you that the suit is very nice to work with if you do character animation.

thanks guys!

@goldandironi wanted to book a 1:1 demo but the first date available was in August. I think if i move forward ill want to buy it sooner than that.

@HippoDasTamusi did see on this page a video that demonstrated how to do a cleanup, i guess i'll really have to get it and see how it works with me/how much time it takes to get the right animation. Based on what i've seen on yt the captures are pretty good, did not see any negative reviews. I'm quite familiar with Mixamo so hoping that can help me move faster rather than slower. Any idea when will the Rokoko Studio 2.0 version be released?

one last question @goldandironi was told by the Support team that a Phone Mount is part of the package im buying. I'm checking the iPhone facial helmets for mocap online and their prices are ridiculous! is the Phone Mount reliable to capture facial data well when placed on the chest? seems to be a bit weird that its not a helmet thats placed on the head. I'm asking to know if i can rely on it 100% to record facial date or if its better to invest in a helmet.

thanks!

I heard that 2.0 is set to release around August, they are already beta testing it since some time.

I recommend that you also use a cleanup tool beyond Rokoko Studio (like Motionbuilder, but that is a pricey one). I heard there is a Houdini/SideFX software (not sure if a plugin or standalone) that is quite cheap and also has good smoothing algorithms. There are probably more alternatives too. It's also very helpful to use the Mixamo control rig in C4D to correct any MoCap issues like intersections

I had no idea there's such a thing as smoothing plugins for mocaps, I thought the capture will be like 90% accurate and demanding small fixations here and there. I'm familiar with Mixamo and that's about it. Will definitely need to get the suit then guide myself on how to move to the next step- hoping having to fix the captures won't be time consuming.

It's basically just a very simple filter that removes any jitter (but also makes you lose detail the more you crank it up). I just use it because I need really clean motion capture as I animate for the big screen where every jitter is very visible. Maybe you don't even need to use any of this and just take the raw recording.
