GI Prepass Calculations Still Take Longer and Longer

Recommended Posts

This issue has been around for at least a decade and still no fix. I does not need a scene file to test just set up a cube which had had some inner extrusions so as to give some geometry to work on. a HDRI sky and set your GI up as IR/LM.

If you want to team render then you need to cache the GI so that is simple to do BUT as has been the case for many years this is a right royal PIA..the times for the GI passes just get steadily longer and longer till you well exceed the time taken for a single non fly through frame. Since Maxon now want to push RedShift I can only assume that they will not be doing anything to fix this age old bug.

The only way to ease this is to keep shutting down the program and restart from the last frame calculated.

Anyone found any other workarounds ?

Its hard to know is anyone who is doing any professional work even use those renderers, I highly doubt, they are just outdated.

I spent absolutely ages avoiding external render engines, theyre just an expense and hassle that I didn't want to deal with. But now? I'd never go back to c4d's built in engines. the render speed, quality and pace at which you can work is 10x better elsewhere. I occasionally use standard engine for a quick background pass or some volumetric lights but i'm never touching it again for work.

As for using it professionally, quite a few people do, I'd say at least a third of c4d work is done in standard or physical render.

Regarding the GI render times, could you provide an example scene? I actually can't replicate your issue when using the correct GI settings. My example attached, after 1000 frames I still have zero render time per frame.

I can't imagine a third of all professionals suffering with this ice-age technology. At least not if they render more than the occasional clay render.

Keep in mind a significant number of users only use c4d for still images, the render speed and animation related issues dont affect them. Also this only really affects people doing great big long shots, if you cut and make a new shot like you would in most animation, the problem never shows up. Also, were only talking GI here, lots of people simply dont use GI in the first place because of the render speed.

Yeah but in my experience Standard / Physical is slow af even without GI. Once you add in some diffuse reflectance your rendertimes shoot up like crazy, not to mention DoF or Motion Blur.

DOF and motion blur can both handled in post with effectively zero render time so theyre easy to work around. Blurred reflections, are slow but they get a lot more bearable if you know to switch to physical render. Someone here last week had a dental device which was giving me 2 minute render times. Switch to physical and it was under 10 seconds.

Honestly I've never seen really good looking Post DoF. Has this changed with Deep Rendering / Deep Images? Every time I've tried it or seen it used in a good looking way it was just super light DoF. Nothing like nice bokehs.

Motion Blur I agree with, almost no reason to do it in the render.
