A very interesting video was posted last month, and this time not by 2-minutes-papers.

It's a new research paper on acoustics with applications in game design offering dynamic audio simulation based on surrounding materials. Like in real-world, the acoustic waves get distorted depending the material on surfaces changing the amplitude of a noise.

Interesting. I always felt audio was neglected in 3D. It might change...

 

This system seems to be relatively easy to set-up.  It requires however an environment with solid 3D shapes, otherwise the acoustic "voxelization" won't be accurate. This will limit the optimization and baking (many games use 3D geometries only for nearby objects with interaction, the rest is backed in 2D maps).
