  1. Holy, wow thank you so much for this Cerbera. I wish there was some way I could compensate you for taking time out like this. It's incredible you made time to do this. This all makes sense. Just a couple of questions from me; - I've attached a couple of screenshots to which I ask, why did you build those formations into the mesh rather than just leaving regular quads and flow? - As each island tapers from the bottom to where it joins the sole, would you just slide/extrude out from the outer edge of each island before extruder the inner? - Once I've built the remainder of the sole from your advice, how would you approach getting the side profile curvature of the sole? Also, if there is a resource of course you think would explain everything rather than me taking up any more of your time, please let me know. I've watched MILG a couple of times however I don't think it covers some of the reasonings behind your example which is super fascinating. Again, I can't thank you enough for explaining this. As I'm sure you know to a beginner like me, it truly means a lot to get this valuable advice/insight from a pro.

  2. Good to know where the Project settings can be found. Turned it Gray-Blue and then worked out that I just didn't have enough segments. Glad that's over with, was driving me nuts! Thanks for helping out an absolute beginner.

  3. I redone shot 2 with increase in particles, faster wind, faster pod animation and motion blur. Also enabled ACES in AE correctly this time so will have that in place for the finished piece

  4. If you want different color, press Ctrl+D (project settings) and in Project Settings tab change default object color to Gray-Blue...

  5. as. Jay said, you´ve enabled X-Ray option with few objects, simply select them and in Basic tab disable x-ray option... If I tried add any object to the scene, everytime is in default state which means disabled x-ray... You could set your own default parameters for every object, but not expect in your case this scenario...

  9. Cheers - that's better - now we have info to work with ! 🙂 I suspect it is a hardware issue tbh. You can find out if yours is compatible with S24 by going to Preferences / viewport hardware, and noting the version settings here... mine looks like this, but if yours isn't current enough it should warn you here... If it reports as being fine, then you need to upload the scene file to see if we can replicate / find another answer. CBR

  11. Could be a number of things - impossible to be sure without the scene file. But check that X-ray is not activated in the objects' basic tab. If it's not that, and you don't have a transparent material applied, or a display tag affecting visibility, then it may be a problem with your hardware, or the Open GL display. Your profile is incomplete so we don't know what that hardware is, or what version you are using, because 16 student edition would be impossible in 2021. CBR

  12. One thing to watch out for is what Autodesk did with the initial release of Maya Indie. Originally, only the first year was at the $250/year indie subscription price and that was then set to renew automatically at the full $1620/year subscription price for the second year. Now, Autodesk changed that on August 7th, 2020 so that the renewal price is now at the $265/year level but current users are a still suspicious as they say that the terms of the indie subscription do change often and therefore strongly recommend that everyone shut off the auto-renew option. Plus, the ability to get the indie subscription is a well kept secret at the Autodesk site and you are more than likely to be directed to Maya Light which is NOT the indie subscription. Here is the link So once again, we see that nothing is clean and clear when it comes "to good to be true" licensing. Honestly, this is where modo beats everyone and that may be one of the main reasons why their users are so passionate about the software as they have a very simple and fair model: upgrade from any past version for the same price under their maintenance plan of $440. Honestly, if MAXON allowed perpetual license holders to upgrade to any future perpetual license version for the same price, I would not need an indie version. That would be ideal. Dave

  13. Really digging the new placement tools. It's something I've wanted, been looking for ever since I got interested in 3D. Also, the new Asset browser seems to be super as of now. Building my own little Kitbash library means I don;t have to keep opening other files.

  14. Is it just me or does it seem like MAXON really puts their foot in their mouth when discussing/defending the features of each new release? Invariably, the arguments they make don't wash with everyone and after much discussion in the forums we get the expected "Goodbye MAXON...it has been a great X years but I am out of here". The gaffe this time around didn't even have anything to do with S24 but a discussion on why R23 bugs may not be fixed. I mean, that really is a little irritating to your perpetual license customers and essentially says "Hi. We at MAXON only stand behind our current products! Customer Care to us means if you want it fixed, you need to buy it again!" Really? Imagine if the automobile industry worked that way. "Brakes don't work on the 2020 car you just purchased? Well, just lease the 2021 model." I mean, that is essentially what was said in a previous post over the advantages of subscriptions over perpetual licenses. Seriously, that is a ridiculous argument. Personally, I don't buy the whole code base argument because I can't imagine that it is impossible to modify the S24 code base such that new features introduced between R23 and S24 get turned off. You then release this as an R23 patch. That would be the smart thing to do because you then only have ONE code base across you entire user base to worry about rather than separate codes bases for each release...with the additional benefits of happy customers of previous releases getting their bugs fixed. Even if you can't do that for certain tools in R23 because that tool was completely re-written from scratch in S24, then just disable as much of the new features as you safely can. So what if a new feature creeps into the R23 patch -- it is a win-win situation for everyone. You have only one code base to worry about and users of previous revisions get more stable software with a few additional features. So using bug fixes as a motivation for going with subscriptions was an ill conceived statement where perpetual license owners are concerned. No one who is dead set against subscriptions will be pushed into subscriptions...they will just be pushed into Blender. I think MAXON needs to seriously wake up to that fact. If you want to keep the perpetual license user you need to think differently. We are a lost cause as far as subscriptions are concerned because Adobe has taught us that at some point in the future, the new features will not justify the cost of the annual subscription and eventually you will feel like you are paying each year just to use the same old software...bugs and all. Honestly, MAXON should just hire Chris Schmidt to talk about the features of a new release and stay quiet. You are not helping yourself. Dave

  15. A sad + 1 from me. And I do have to say that I very much agree with Flima. Selling a $3,500 software and effectively supporting it with bug fixes for just a month or two (until SP1) is unacceptable. A perpetual purchaser / upgrader should be entitled to at least 2 or 3 bug fix rounds IMO - a minimum of 12 months active bug fixing support.

  16. I could have quoted your entire post, as I agree 100% with all you mentioned. Couldn't have said it better. I stayed out of the discussion until now, as I feel you now have voiced exactly what is on my mind, and wanted to support your message. While I regret not having some of the new features, I am more than happy of using R20 without its periodical need to connect and validate its license.

  17. I do hate subscriptions. And I hate online activation / periodic checking. Even though I have R21, I don't use it because when I don't use it regularly it loses the login credentials and I have to look for my password again. And it's a pain with plugin licenses compared to the easy serial system before. Also I don't want to have my workstations online all the time. The MSA for R20 to R21 was waste of money for me. Therefore R20 is the last version of Cinema I enjoy and I'm glad it was a great release (compared to what came after, feature-wise, in my opinion). As a hobbyist I'm not interested in renting software, I want to be able to use them whenever and wherever I want at a fixed one-time cost (except for maintenance for perpetual software which I can stop at any time and still use the software). I paid for R16 - R21 Studio with MSA and purchased almost all commercially available C4D plugins (TFD, Forester, X-Particles, Drive, RealTraffic, everything from Nitro4D and GSG etc.), various render engines (Vray, Redshift and Cycles 4D) and commercial training. With this I can work for years to do almost everything 3D with Cinema, specially combined with Blender. When there was MSA, I was very enthusiastic about Cinema. Siggraph with new MAXON announcements for the upcoming versions were like Christmas and Birthday for me. MAXON as a company with the new management and policy lost all charm for me and sadly I lost interest in Cinema improvements. Online documentation, online asset library, subscription-only features (even including plugins like CV Tokens), no Cineversity for perpetual license owners, MAXON's way of obscuring the rental cost with tax and annual payments, hiding the perpetual upgrade cost, limited bugfix support, that all draws a clear picture to me, not my thing. As someone mentioned, I feel the same, MAXON joined the dark side. With the online checking and subscription, MAXON lost me as paying customer. Also, to me it's clear that perpetual licenses will disappear at some point. Well, I'm only a hobbyist, I understand there are other requirements for enterprises. I'm not mad at MAXON and as mentioned, I still enjoy using the last (and to me best) perpetual version of Cinema.
