  1. Off topic but I would like to say I am really enjoying the conversations happening in this thread. I just wish we could all keep chatting like this usually, instead of just once every 6 months when a new version of C4D releases.

  2. I hope Maxon makes a significant donation to the Blender Development Fund. It would only be right considering how they will be profiting from the work of the Blender community.

  3. I think people are over analyzing things. As I see it, Cinema 4D is a service now, and that service is providing software that is always kept up to date and working to the highest standards, a service people will pay for. They don't really want permanent licenses out there, and have therefore priced them out accordingly. I think Maxon has made it pretty clear their roadmap from here on out is all Scene Nodes all the time, until everything currently possible in Cinema is converted to Scene Nodes. So what possible incentive could Maxon have to spend any resources adding or improving features that they are actively working to make obsolete with new and vastly more versatile Scene Node driven features. Cinema 4D is in a rebuilding mode and have been pretty up front about this. It's up to users to decide if the software as offered meets their current needs enough to go along for the ride.

  4. If I may...and this is all based on giving every courtesy to Maxon that they are NOT out to milk us dry like those bloodsucking leeches at Adobe. Not all development cycles are 1 year or 6 months. Major feature development can take longer than that. R26 development did NOT start on 9/16 once R25 was announced. So there is an overall roadmap and I would imagine it spans a maximum of 5 years as most corporations are not willing to invest further out than that (any more is risky because markets change). So, I really don't think Rick or anyone else at Maxon said "Yes. Let's make the UI the big change in R25 along with three other features" and made a conscious choice way back in the planning phase that was all there was going to be in R25. Pretty confident that more was planned for R25 but something happened. Developers ran into unforeseen issues, things were unstable, quality of those planned features was sub-standard, etc...etc...etc. The decision was therefore made to not include them in this release cycle. That is why I asked Rick "what happened last year". But that does NOT mean they will not appear in the next release. So R26 will be a little fatter to make up for the thinness of R25 as they get back on track with their development schedule....or so I hope. Where I fault Maxon is that they decided to release R25 rather than wait for all the planned features to be ready. Their reasoning for doing so: "We wanted to get these features into your hands as fast as possible". That is reasoning that really only benefit subscribers. It does NOT serve the perpetual license holder. It appeases the subscriber because they do get the new features earlier with no additional cash outlay. The perpetual license holder is left with "I am paying $950 for this?" type of feeling and at the same time placing a HUGE bet that everything will actually catch up by the time R27 is released so that the next time they shell out $950 they are getting a massive update that makes up for everything. Sorry...when you are paying 32% more than a subscriber, you want to see the goods up front. That is why I kept saying "Why did you release R25 as is? This makes no sense" because all they did was play into the Adobe fear that they really don't care about keeping C4D relevant and really are just milking a captive audience while giving very little in return. That is the REAL downside of subscriptions (you are paying just to use rather than paying to get better features) and R25 did nothing to dispel that fear. It was a bad move. Now, someone mentioned that Maxon was in debt. Not surprising given all their acquisitions. Therefore I strongly urge ALL perpetual license holders NOT to upgrade to R25 until you see what is in R26. You have until R27 is announced to make that decision without incurring additional costs because you are not eligible for R26 anyway....therefore wait. Does R26 catch up to where R25 should have been or is Maxon really just milking us dry. The only benefit to perpetual licenses is that (unlike the old maintenance programs), time is on your side AFTER the next release has been announced. If Maxon is hurting for cash, you also send them a signal by waiting: Sorry....you need to do better before you see my cash. Dave

  5. Well... I suppose Maxon does not have the personnel capacity to work on both Scene Nodes and "old workflow" improvements at the same time. Especially when that old workflow will go away sooner or later, and everything will be based on the Scene Nodes core internally. I know they said that the Object Manager will not go away and that C4D will remain accessible, but that does not mean that the implementation of the current objects will stay the same. Every single object implementation will need to be changed. (And frankly I don't even have an idea how that will look in the end, as the true issues - dynamics, simulation, cloth, hair, joints, particles etc pp have not yet shown up in the Nodes.) If I were an independent programmer working on a personal project I would probably do the same. Not waste resources on things that are going to be discarded anyway. Put the effort into places where it really counts. Unfortunately, if the place that really counts cannot be finished in one iteration, it remains incomplete and of marginal use for the end user. That's the thing we are feeling now - an expensive upgrade that doesn't deliver the value for the daily work. What would make a difference is a cleanup of Object Priorities, but that will be done through the Nodes concept anyway. What would make a difference is parallelization and GPU usage, but that will be done through the Nodes concept anyway. What would make a difference... well, you get the gist. (Hypothetically speaking, the developers have solutions for the pressing issues. I'm not a developer at Maxon so I can't speak with confidence but that's what I would do.) Sadly we don't see it yet, and worse, we will probably not see it tomorrow. I can understand the current release. Part of it is UI changes (and yes, there is some programming effort behind that too) because the UI is independent of the 3D core and can continue after the Scene Nodes turnover, so it's not wasted. Part of it is Capsules to make Scene Nodes accessible in advance, so users can get accustomed to the method of working. And then there are some add-ons. The true development is in the core. And actually I have a feeling that the previous releases might have worked after the same pattern, but I don't feel it as acute since I wanted the add-ons. -- In that light, I can even understand the move to subscriptions, which bind the users and create a steady flow of income without the need to "convince" people to upgrade (although subscriptions come with their own bunch of risks). That doesn't mean I like this upgrade. The vastly increased Perpetual costs (from an MSA just a few years ago) are a huge burden in a time with very little income and plans falling through. (Have been since my yearly software cost went up to three month's apartment rent.) I need some problem solvers and speedups, not "try this here" software. In addition (and that may be the biggest issue), Cinema now has no suitable competitive Perpetual renderer any more - Redshift went subscription only, and Insydium demoted Cycles4D to an add-on of XParticles (also now subscription in all but name), which doesn't bode well for a CyclesX upgrade. This is all in all not the best position to be in.

  6. I haven't seriously touched C4D in months. Both due to my job (switched from artist to mainly management position) and just not being able to afford the newer releases, so I'm stuck on R21. I love C4D and the entire community but I just cannot justify this amount of money for the occasional hobby project. I have Blender for that now. The second they would announce an indie version I would subscribe if it's a fair price. Hell, give us a non commercial version for the hobbyists. Just SOMETHING. Yes, I know there's the student version but I am not a student anymore.

  7. If you are willing to switch to subscriptions at all from a Perpetual, the best strategy is to wait. You can always enter a subscription with no penalty at all, and you can just keep working with the Perpetual until you finally see something that is worth subscribing to (or buy a new Perpetual if it still exists, as the savings accumulate; or switch to another program if you don't like the results). If you switch to subscription from a recent Perpetual right now, you'd be crazy. I have an R23, and before I'd subscribe (which I won't since I hate subscriptions with the power of a thousand suns) I would milk the Perpetual for all it's worth. I can easily skip the R25 (only things I'd like to have are in the S24 but well, losses occur) and see what S26, R27 etc. bring. That is, after all, why one has a Perpetual. The true problem for Perpetual users is not the content of the R25 anyway, it's the lack of a suitable competitive Perpetual renderer (the choices are slim by now).

  10. hmm im still trying set up my layout as before... little bit problematic there is so much white icons and it does hard to recognize them. i hope devs notices this and will ad icon colorizing option... and as second theme i inspected sclupt features. :d of course no brushes and other improvoments but wait, there is new icons. so i inspected them as a new cool improvoments of sclupt module. i hope new icons will make me great scluttor... but okey put joke to side and lets see what are new icons..... here i comparement of sclupt icons... reallf i waited some updates on sclupt since maxon acquires forger.... but this is.. i dont know guys but its like very bad joke. some icons one by one same. little bit pixel differencies... really? i just want to ask to devs. you guys why buy forger??? why used icons mimics that much blender icons? why not forger icons??? forger icons already good and minimaslistic.... omg what a shame... instead of own softwares icons you guys prefer to using icons from blender.....

  14. Indeed, worrying and fighting over which brush is better is a basic trait of human nature, it seems: unfortunately the majority of the human race seems forever stuck in a perceived illusionary battle of "my X > your Y". Sofware is just software. Use what works best for you and for the job at hand. That said, if one brush paints the same strokes as the other brush, but costs a thousand times more without any clear obvious advantage for a given job, one cannot but question the pricing policy. And your daughter is definitely right: instead of bickering, spend more time on creating. And enjoy the brush that you've picked - or change it to another one if that works better for you, the painting that you're working on, or if the price is out of reach. 15. Hello, The UV projections occupied my mind for quite a while, I made some tools to unwrap them, to make the edition easily, add features to BP UV Edit... But the problem was still the same, the UV edition is still boring to do and quite often we prefere to use the common automatic projections when it's possible. I was wondering, could we simply make other kind of projections to fit more shapes ? So I came up with a new plugin, the UV Projector ! It works like a deformer object and only edit the UVW property, it have some interesting new UV projections with the advantage to not have to make the object editable ! Here is some new projections : Rhombicuboctahedral : It's like a cubic projection with the 45° edges. Cylinder with deformations : Like the classic cylinder, with deformations to adjust the shapes. Half-cylinder : Some times you want to have only one side round and the other side plane. Y shape : It's maybe still a bit wobbly to setup but it gives a nice start. The last is I think the most interesting, it's a plane shape with editing points : Simply uset he point mode to move the surfaces points and adjust them to your object, you can literraly wrap it around your object ! All the features and download here : https://code.vonc.fr/projecteur-uv The free version is limited to 1000 polygons count with all the features so you can still enjoy it. The plugin is a part of the Vonc Suite that contains others tools. If you have other projections shapes ideas don't hesitate !

How would you feel for example, if you were paying for Netflix, and in a whole year, they added nothing new and only change the interface? ... and I dont know, put a couple of movies that are missing the ending, and one movie that was already on netflix (cv ArtSmart) but now is in the front page.

  19. I suppose the phrases "highest standards" and "up to date" mean something very different to some people... The other side of the coin is what possible incentive existing users would have to keep renting for years on end while waiting around for that magical rebuild promising to solve all the existing missing and half-baked functionality to be finished? According to that line of reasoning the most rational step would be to stop paying the rent, move to another warm cozy rain-tight house and wait a few years while the leaky unfinished building is finally restored and renewed. It would save a lot of money. I agree that it's up to each individual user and business to decide what works best for them.

  21. Well, I asked for the new price of upgrading a permanent license and it cost 1800€+VAT 2019 ---> Upgrading to the newer permanent license ----> 600€+VAT ( +Cineversity 1 year of subscription, + assets, +support service) 2020 ---> Upgrading to the newer permanent license ----> 1000€+VAT ( no civersity, no assets, support for 3 months) 2021 ---> Upgrading to the newer permanent license ----> 1800€+VAT ( no civersity, no assets, support for 3 months) What a shameless company. Mograph was just a magic trick to put your dirty hands in our pockets and steal our money. Let's move to Blender asap.

  22. Couple of points, if perpetuals hold them back, just ditch perpetual plans altogether, because right now it doesnt help perpetuals or subscribers half baked tools. Or ditch subscriptions, whatever works best. Second, if they release unfinished tools -and they did- then why are they charging us for? Does anyone here delivers some unfinished animation yet ask the client to pay for it? Whatever happened, is not the customers fault.

  24. You're right - for a couple of years we tried to do it ourselves. It did not go well. We had multiple people on staff spending their entire time approving or disapproving student software, and response times were pretty bad. Especially because in many parts of the world everyone is starting school at the same time. At that time, we were only providing students with Cinema 4D. Now we have Maxon One, and have added all the student demand for Redshift and Red Giant software. The old system simply wasn't sustainable, so as Kent suggested we looked to an external company that specializes in this. They charge a small fee, and with the volume of student license requests we process it simply makes the most sense to ask students to cover that. Otherwise we'd need to increase subscription prices for everyone. (and btw those people we had doing verifications before have been reassigned and are much happier now that their job involves more than clicking Approve or Deny)

  26. To be fair, the new Cinema 4D Sculpt icons are based on the previous ones, that weren't modified since R14 in 2012. For R25, they were just simplified. In 2012, Blender still had a text based interface (like the old lightwave). The small icons came later... I don't know exactly, probably in 2017... I think Blender copied first Cinema 4D (or other softwares), then MAXON was inspired by Blender.

  28. This is quite funny. I honestly never cared much about performance, because I didnt know any other software so far. For me, the absurd slowdown that happened when i tried to animate a lot of things were sort of a "ah, working with 3D is like this" type of thing. I even predicted in my project, specially working on visuals for concerts... that I needed to optmize as much as I could, keeping things as low res as possible, low polygons, hide as much as I could in the viewport, to continue to work nicely. It became part of my workflow. But after working a bit with Blender and Maya... it is like... "wow, is this real life? What?? I can animate all of this without slowling down?" Like a crooked painting that you never noticed it was crooked, until someone properly placed another painting right next to it. Cant unsee this. That is super cool!!! Congrats 🙂 !! Im sure the scattered toys also helps on your brainstorming sessions hehe.

  30. Mograph is great. It allows you to make a huge scene quickly. It's a superpower of C4D. The problem is performance. I can't imagine being able to do this project the way I did in Blender: https://youtu.be/A-nS0VNwT6o In Blender I made it in a little over 1 day. With C4D tools, there is a chance to work faster. But it lacks the dexterity, the responsiveness when polygons and objects get more than 10 cubes. I left C4D R 17 for Blender and went back to S24 hoping that now the tipping point, now things will change and now I can work faster. But nothing has changed. The new interface won't allow me to do large projects. I'm just a regular freelancer. But even my modest projects are freezing out C4D. My experience in graphics is over 20 years. I know how to model competently. I don't know what to do next. After all, current trends are asking for more and more detailed scenes. In Blender there is a desire to donate. In C4D I don't want to do it, and I don't want to buy it, much less buy it for such a huge amount of money.
    1 point
  31. Would those people have ever bothered to be interested in C4D? They can probably get a strong idea of what C4D can do just by watching a Youtube vid, or ten of them, or checking out a Chris Schmidt Rocket Lasso episode. If they like what they see, you'd assume most of them would find a $2.99 charge to be a bargain. Yet the argument here is, wow, I was all set to dive into this cool looking software, but there's a three dollar charge to do it. That's it, I'm out, give me something else instead, that software looks amazing but if I have to forgo one latte or borrow $3 from mum I'm not going to do it. I'm guessing a bunch of those students still live at home and can likely ask their parents to borrow the credit card. This takes five minutes. But anyone who is aghast at paying $3 to have a full version was never likely to buy a sub anyway when the (wow it's FREE!) version of Blender is also out there. So they were never going to get C4D anyway. The argument is Maxon is missing out on many thousands of dollars of future rental subs because those same future subscribers are being nudged to cough up $3. If those folks are losing their minds at paying $3, were they ever going to sub in the future? Maybe the teacher above should be pushing Blender on everyone if that is the highest priority.

  32. LOL! A "service fee" during activation. What service? The 0.00001seconds of CPU time that the server needs to check if the serial is legit? What a joke, holy crap! EDIT: Now that I think about it, yes they need to check if someone is legit a student. But other companies do that for free as well. It's free advertising, free way to bind new users to your software. It's dumb taking money for this.

  33. I took a deeper look at nodes. And here the things are harder to judge. I think that's a great system and I feel much sympathy to it's creators. But while it's not yet production-ready and we don't yet know how to utilize that, I think of more primitive things. Simply - what does this release give to my workflow? What does it really fix? And despite I see a revolution in nodes, I see no evolution in vital places we spend the time doing our work. Despite they're pretty easy to clean-up. So a vera controversial feeling emerges. Like there are two different worlds - of our work, and of development plans. Weird. About like in After Effects, but their devs just s*** on users for years, and every release is a laugh. Not quite, but close to it

  34. @BoganTW, @luchifer Have you guys taught classes as instructors at schools / colleges / universities before? In practice it is almost impossible to get students to willingly pay for extra software or books unless the school enforces it. Yes, I completely agree that rationally it makes no sense because those same students do not think twice about ordering a $5 Starbucks coffee every day. But I tried convincing groups that I taught myself a few times in the past to spend a small amount on software, and it. just. doesn't. work. Nor can you as a teacher enforce it unless it becomes part of the requirements of the curriculum and the course outline - which means convincing the department at the institute where you teach to purchase a school license. And unless it's a relatively small sum (a couple of hundred $$) or a free school license is offered, the school is not going to allow for the extra cost. Not when AutoDesk provides free school licenses, and your college is already paying through the nose for the Adobe suite. The institute where I teach classes have all AutoDesk products, Houdini, and Blender available pre-installed on all workstations, and via a software deployment system free for all students at home. If Maxon would provide free campus licenses it would go a long way to generate good will towards the software. If not - well, not many of my students are aware that Cinema4D exists. They all know about AutoDesk and Blender, of course.

  35. To me it looks like it is the OnTheHub Kivuto estore that is charging the fee. So Maxon has handed off all the work involved in getting this coupon code, for all your students, to another company. And that company is charging the fee to cover their costs to provide this service. What is involved in this? It looks like the company checks the credentials of every student to ensure they are a student. You have to use your schools email address, which must get verified to ensure it is legitimate, then you probably get an email with the coupon. So that is the service you are paying for. https://estore.onthehub.com/p/MaxonOne?&pr=true Maxon will still be incurring costs on their side such as bandwidth download costs and authentication servers etc... As much as you would all like to think, Maxon is not Autodesk. They are not the same size or have the same income. So handing this off to an outside company to deal with would actually save them money by not having to build a separate system, and support it, when it brings in no value. Plus it would have made it much faster for them to get this offering out to students.

  36. Haha, love your daughter's commentary on this issue. And it is a cool thing you love C4D. I love it too, but, personally speaking, it is becoming less and less worth the money. If they added an indie license, then...things could take a different direction. Also, a giant and substantial release every 2 years it is not so bad either. Not sure if it would work.. and people would die of boredom mostly hehe.

  40. So you had me convinced of your sincerity up until that last sentence. Exactly when did you stop trying to be dismissive? Look, in light of R25 not being the most well received release and hearing about organizational changes and problems with collaboration does point out valid reasons for concern. Per Anders did leave this year too as well...so there are connections that could be made and all of that is alarming to someone who has invested heavily in C4D and sincerely wishes to continue doing so in the future. But when I connect all those dots together, I think there are valid concerns over that future. And to be fair, I did ask if I was reading too much into it....but maybe you missed that part. But it appears by your own comments that you are not that happy with C4D but are content to not say anything about until you are called out. That is fine. We all have different thresholds. But don't criticize others for being "bonkers" or tin-foil hat conspirators when they have concerns but then lecture us about how you like to be constructive while at the same time raising the exact same concerns with C4D that the rest of us have. Nevertheless, you won't hear me calling you bonkers. To hopefully end this thread on a positive note: I would like applaud Rick for setting the score straight...and continuing to do it in a very respectful and polite manner. He is top shelf in my book and I sincerely appreciate his participation in this forum and his patience...especially with me. Just remember that it all comes from a common desire to keep C4D meaningful and relevant for every user as time goes on. Dave

  41. @RBarrett I think you have a tough job being the front face of this shipwreck. certainly you are a company man and trying your best but the facts remain. this is the poorest release ever and it simply can't be that you people are not aware of that since that would constitute, sorry to say, mass delusion. reading on what 3dpangel says it seems you guys lost mograph guy which is, whatever circumstances of that are pure loss. i watched his award winning speech and he seemed very eloquent and humble since he mentioned whole bunch of people there. at least i know how to pronounce on of the admins name now 🙂 bottom line is, Cinema is looking very poor and that is always management fault. maybe it is intentionally weakened by current ceo so it can be swallowed by adobe or some other mastodont which would be extreme but hey, it is effin release 25 and if one would say that this would be it 10 years ago he would be called crazy sorry folks, I am not throwing money at pencil pushers and outright hypocrites, total crap release, just plain madness for dinosaur toolset. got myself blender and will chip on it. I wish you all good luck on this wonderful site, this community is best what Cinema has to offer but I feel it is going lightwave way

  42. There is this dismissive tone I just dont get it. "It is just a software"? it is a software that is costing us A LOT of money, offering us little advancements and updates, ZERO listening to users feedback, completely ignoring all the REAL problems the software has, offering in exchange freaking gimmicks, improvements that nobody asked for... so what, we are supposed to be quiet, behave like good subsurvient users and be mindful of our "mental health"? This exact same tone can be seen on Redshift forums.. treating costumers like entitled babies. We are customers, we pay a lot for this, we are allowed to be pissed if all the things we request for the software we are PAYING for is being intentionally ignored. And so far, people here have been respectful towards each other (well, minus one kid...) but it doesnt mean we cant be honest about how we feel about the software we have invested thousands of dollars, and years of our lives. I've said it before and I will say it again. If this pathetic excuse of an update doesnt affect you, then, good for you. But dont diminish other people's complaints just because it doesnt personaly affect you (This works for a lot of other things in life too)
