  1. Before Maxon i worked for over a decade as an IT tech, diagnosing and resolving customer problems. At Maxon i started as a tech support guy and later switched to leading QA, afterwards to UX Design. Trying to understand the problems of users and finding solutions that work for them is something i do since the 80s. Even my hobbies of making and upcycling are about solving problems for myself and other people. While i am in no way perfect in what i do you can safely assume that i do try to see issues from a users perspective, otherwise my job(s) would be impossible to do. While it can often look like i want to defend Maxon and Cinema 4D, which is not a wrong impression over all, you don't commit to a company and a product as long as i did without getting attached to it, my main aim is usually to explain why things are the way they are, so everyone involved can try to make the best of the situation. I am a very practically minded person and from my experience information is the main thing you need to solve issues, this goes both ways. Since i am not an executive i simply can't offer many of the solutions people expect to hear from me. I can try to point out workarounds and alternatives and i definitely try to include feedback i get from users in my UX Design work, but i can't change policies or modify development plans and i certainly can't announce any possible future changes that are being asked for.

  2. Hi folks I was asked on pm to show a scene which "proves" major performance increase with scene nodes over MoGraph cloning. Here is a small setup which illustrates how capable node system is: Scene breakdown: 50000 rocks, gazillion polygons, distribution algorithm is preventing overlaps as much as possible If you load the scene as is you will notice that navigating is practically impossible since it is very slow and unresponsive, practically not usable. - Click in the empty space in node graph - Change the viewport to fast shading mode Now you can smoothly navigate the viewport on single mid level consumer graphics card. I would like to stress that system is not yet optimized for playback and full performance Rocks.c4d

  3. Maxon can't fix stuff nobody reports ! To imagine these things are worthless or ineffectual is flat out wrong ! They might see threads on forums but nothing is more effective in showing them a problem than submitting a bug report including a scene file and repro steps. I will report this today ! Thank you for your diagnostic notes, which I will include as well. CBR

  4. Thank you for your answers. Bezo's technique is very interesting and it works well. On the other hand, for complex objects, it would take too long. You have to look for colors to make selections ... I was just looking to test for more complex files ... Thank you for your answers

  5. My advice for Mac lovers: -Get a juiced up version of the Mini with the original M1 w/ 16Gig and 512 or 1024 GB storage. You'll only spend around 1K. You can use the same monitor(s) and keyboard for your PC 3d work. You can use it for photoshopping, video editing, browsing, etc. It will scratch your Mac itch. If laptop is a need, perhaps a MacBook Air or 2020 MacBook. $800 or so. If real existing funds are abundant jump up to M1 Pro or Max. -If you are more than a student, a fledgling intern, or a 3d wannabe...invest your cherished funds in a PC workstation with space for multiple Nvidia GPUs. They sport CUDA cores, which spawned all modern 3d rendering on the GPU, and they have RT cores, which are dedicated to 3d rendering. The current generation: Nvidia 3070, 3080, 3080TI, or 3090.

  6. Actually Neutron is far richer and more capable in options regarding array, geometry, distributions than ICE. Where it lacks is simulation though

  7. Also, doesnt have sculpting, not even basic tools like C4D, but you can export to Zbrush, and It had this little plugin for fire and combustion that Insydium bought a few years ago called Explosia FX, so.. there you have it, even if XSI is not with us anymore, its legacy will carry over generations. Fuck Autodesk... (sorry guys for the swear)

  8. It doesnt matter, you can still use XSI, but sooner than later you will encounter roadblocks because is no longer supported, so any driver incompatibility and you are EoL. I bought a 4K monitor and XSI was unusable, although Im getting old and have to use bigger fonts, maybe is not your case. If your plan is to freeze your PC as 2015 and never ever update it, then yes, its a great software and your best bet is to look at Vitaly Bulgarov, who last I knew used to be a big name in XSI, although he also use Moi3D, and Im not sure what he is using these days. Art of Vitaly Bulgarov Softimage community still exist, so they can help you as well. www.si-community.com - Index page XSI vs C4D modeling wise.... to start, cons of XSI was splines and text tool, splines plain suck in XSI. They just do, dont ask why, so use Adobe Illustrator if you truly need splines and export as Version 8.0 because nothing latter will be supported. Strenghts... XSI viewport, it can support a lot ... and I really meant A LOT of polygons, more than C4D, 3dsmax and Blender can support together. It has this old modeling school way of thinking where you need to duplicate half your model and scale it -1 to have symmetry working. It has every modeling tool expected plus the ability to go back and modify them through a smart history stack that does not have an equivalent in C4D or Blender. It also have some uncommon shortcuts (I think it was "E" for moving objects "Y" for points ?)... anyway, you can change shortcuts to maya, although you will loose the ability to loop select. Softimage ICE has no match in C4D land, is similar to Houdini, its very intuitive visual programming language, you can render with XSI mental ray or use Redshift -though Im not sure if they still support it. The only thing XSI does not have as far as I remember was fluids (C4D has plugins for that, XSI doesnt). It has Lagoa multiphysics though, very cool to work with but buggy and obviously not supported anymore. If you need fluids, you can export as FBX and use Realflow. Documentation on Lagoa is scarse though, and Autodesk devs didnt knew exactly what to do with ICE. There are some tutorials on youtube about ICE, or modeling, so, do some research, treat it with respect, XSI was one if not the best of all DCC apps in the market. Countless movies were done with it, including Jurassic Park and even after EoL its legacy continued with the Lego movie. Good luck.

  9. Thanks Kent. It is true, i am very bad at sugarcoating. If i can't tell it as i know it, i prefer to not say anything. As for the "need" to be here, there are other things than my job that make me want to be active in the community. There is a lot of satisfaction i derive from seeing people making fantastic stuff with a tool i help creating.

  10. I would like to point out that Srek doesn’t need to be here. He is not doing this as a MAXON representative. He is commenting here because he cares about C4D and the users. And I don’t consider any of his comments as being defensive. They are simply the truth. If it is too late in the timeframe to change a feature then that is how it is. If something is very difficult to implement then consider that as it is, ie it might take a very long time before you ever see that specific feature in C4D. Saying “I understand and will consider it again” means nothing and instead may give false hope and is more akin to lying than telling the truth. Keep up the good work Srek!

  11. Well, in my opinion, Srek is doing a really good job on the forums, communicating with people, even on the difficult topics. And I write this, despite not always being of the same mind.

  12. I tried to answer, but don't know enough about nodes to be venturing an opinion in the end - indeed the amount of people who have Node expertise is marginally less than in almost every other aspect of Cinema because it's relatively newer. But the node guys we do have are pretty immense if they catch you - could be they just missed your post. Anyway - pleased you found an answer and thanks for popping back to post it - sure that will be useful to someone else... CBR

  13. No, I joined the Greyscalegorilla team and am very busy working over there. I like to watch the MAXON Careers page to see what areas they are focusing on.

  14. The one thing that I picked up on immediately was also the one thing you were most disappointed about - the shadows. But there is an issue with the ship passing behind the leaves of the first tree. That is a tough one to fix. You could drop the ship lower so there is less to roto. What makes the issue pop out is that there is one whole branch at the front that disappears when it goes behind the ship and then pops back as the ship passes. That "pop" is what draws my eye to it.....but to be fair I had to view it frame by frame to really understand what was going on. I do have a suggestion shown below: Maybe do layers of different masks generated from frames where things are easier to isolate then parent them all together and track them to the shot Just a thought. Nevertheless, really outstanding as always. The dog is tracked really well (I did not know it was from another shot). This is a real "backyard adventure" in the making. I keep expected James Horner music in the background and a Steven Spielberg voice over. Dave

  15. XSI was one of the best pieces of software, unfortunately it was bought and discontinued by AD a while ago. It would still compare favorable with current 3D DCCs, but you can't get it anymore.
