  1. History shows that Maxon often launched features without following up: sculpting, Bodypaint, UV’s (fixed after 10 years…), particles, dynamics, their physical render engine (let’s not forget the half baked and chaotic implementation of pro render)…
  2. I don't know for students but Maxon is probably losing hobbyists, who progressively get priced out. I can still afford C4D updates for now but when one adds xparticles, redshift and the creative suite, the bill becomes rather harsh.
  3. Am I the only one thinking that after R25’s catastrophic features list, we could have expected a bit more? Zremesher is nice but I’m sure it was added at the end of the cycle, after pixo was acquired last summer. Take it out and you end up with a new cloth engine, new modeling tools that were long overdue (and standard on other packages) and redshift CPU (is it faster than physical?). It’s not bad at all but again, R25 was a non event so I as hoping for an even bigger release with a new particle engine maybe, or a grease pencil, basically something that fosters creativity rather than just workflow enhancements (which are great but Maxon has focused too much on these things lately IMO).
  4. Ahahahah, I loved these 2
  5. Even their merchandising is overpriced…30€ a mug?!😂 what a rip off…
  6. I recently felt like making music again. I had an old copy of Ableton Live that still worked on my MacBook Pro but i decided to upgrade to the latest version for less than 200€...just 200€ after 10 years. I could have purchased a brand new copy of Logic Pro from Apple, one of the most powerful DAW’s in the industry, for 300€. These DAW’s come with loads of powerful virtual instruments that can keep amateurs like me busy for years. I found out that most of the plugins I used back in the days were also working fine, with upgrade prices ridiculously low. For the price of a C4D upgrade, I could have bought myself new software and gear that would have last years…if not decades. That’s how I came to realize how making music has become damn cheap, while 3D became super expensive with cut-throat subscriptions that are progressively killing the hobbyists who can’t keep up with c4D+redshift+X particles+Creative suite+zbrush (soooon!) +XXX I remember when Emagic was purchased by Apple: the prices were like 3x higher with all instruments sold separately. Kind of like Maxon today. Apple then decided to bundle everything and lower the price of Logic so much that the software has become a bargain. Icing on the cake: they turned Logic’s daunting interface into an Applesque UX while adding new cool features over the years, making Logic the best music app for musicians. I just wish they would buy Maxon and do the exact same thing. To make 3D cool and affordable again.
  7. I just realized today that even Forger is now under subscription for about 2€/month. What type of company charges 2€ a month for an app like this?!
  8. Beeple should actually buy Pixo and help stop this nonsense.
  9. The big question indeed: “why the heck didn’t they start charging?”. I always wondered how pixologic could break even with free upgrades for more than 10 years.
  10. Terrible news. R.I.P Zbrush. Maxon will start charging upgrades. In 1 year, users will be forced into subscriptions. I am sad and disgusted.
  11. This is why I would never switch to PC. Sorry I know this is off topic but that’s why so many designers stick to Apple: their stuff actually works although it is not the fastest/greatest performance wise.
  12. Robert Leger: this guy was so good. What has he been up to after all these years?
  13. Yes and don’t forget Janine. 3d fluff was an essential part of my learning back in the days.
  14. You could also use a tileable texture or create one yourself with either photoshop or substance painter (much faster with the latter). There are tons of tutorial online.
  15. Go for Redshift: more stable and uses standard workflows that you can easily carry over to other render engines. On the downside, its biased nature implies many parameters that can feel overwhelming for beginners. Octane is often said to be better for quick photorealistic results, but it's much less stable and its workflow is more specific.
  16. I played with R25 this WE. I really like the new UI. Very logical to me. I finally had a look at nodes and started playing with capsules. It did not take me long to realize how powerful these will become and I’m sure a community of capsule makers will soon arise and start sharing their own creations. Not sure why Maxon did not advertise them much. Maybe because of all the limitations… Still a super weak release in my opinion, the weakest in a decade and definitely not worth paying an upgrade from R21 or R23.
  17. As a beta tester said recently, they have been trying to rebuild the engine of a plane while flying for the last 4 years or so. Apparently it is a huge undertaking. My only gripe is that they charge a lot of money to get half of a point release at best. « Edit »: actually R25 is the best reason for switching to subscriptions. Who would be crazy enough to upgrade one’s perpetual license and fork out 1000€ for a UI overhaul? Im sure Maxon thought about it.
  18. Why do they keep talking about features? I mean, how can they pretend that a new UI is a new feature? And they dare showcasing capsules as if this tech was production ready. It’s half baked stuff and yet they call it « features ». To all the Maxon guys on this forum, please raise your voices and tell us what’s wrong. R25 has been the weakest release since I started using the software from R11.5. Not even Adobe is at this level of hypocrisy.
  19. What a joke ahah! The UI overhaul was the one thing I was not expecting at all. Hard to believe that it was a request from the community…. And about the other features…well, what other features?! LOL They should have postponed this release. With subs, they no longer have to stick to an annual plan so why the heck did they release such a shameful, lackluster product?

    R25 Expectations

I don’t think they will remove the C4d perpetual license yet. 50% of their revenues come from subscriptions and they recruited a lot of new users thanks to their new policy. They will get rid of perpetual licenses once the share of subscriptions is high enough, around 80% I guess. Meanwhile they will keep reducing the perks and, why not, increasing prices to force the last few hardcore users to migrate.

    R25 Expectations

Most of the packages above have an indie version that is about 50% less expensive than C4D.
  22. Create a sphere with a reasonable amount of subdivisions. Draw a poly selection on the surface, detach, extrude, add an SDS modifier. Repeat until you have enough shapes. Delete the sphere. Use a soft selection to tweak the shapes further and interweave them.
  23. Seems like maxon has no plans to include Redshift in C4D natively. They gave up on physical render too so I wonder how long they can keep charging the same insane prices without a decent built in render engine.
