  1. Just watched the podcast. Jeez all of this is so depressing. My niece has been crying herself to sleep at night because she had her heart set on an art-based career and is now wondering if there is any point. I'm 42 and I am confused as to what to do now, so it must be confusing for the younger generation trying to work out where to put their time. Simply looking at the capability for fake news and increasingly advanced fraud, as well as the huge environmental impact of the scope of AI computing, it's hard for me to see AI as anything but a net negative to society. Sure it might cure some diseases and make us live longer, but at the cost of a planet that will be increasingly difficult to live on.

This is cool, although it’s pretty overwhelming how quickly this type of technology is progressing.

Same. Been finding it overwhelming for the past few months but also frustrating not really knowing what is worth learning now that won't be made defunct down the line. I'm largely a 2D guy that has in the past used 3D sparingly but the past few months I've been going harder into 3D but every day I see something AI related that makes me wonder if it is a waste of time.

  3. I'm kind of surprised that there still hasn't been anything done to Bodypaint. Maybe Maxon were intending on buying Substance to add to Maxon One before Adobe swooped in and picked them up 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately, 3DConnexion's request to Maxon to remove their (Maxon's) previously perfectly functioning space mouse driver (version 2023.2.0) so that they can replace it with their own independently running one has been an absolute disaster as far as I can see, and the new driver they provide not only has terrible installation problems, but also has serious problems and negative effects on Cinema's stability for everyone I know that uses one including myself. I have never seen such a terrible case of self-sabotage from a company, and now I simply can't use my space mouse because it affects Cinema so negatively. I suggest you write to 3DConexxion like I did and complain vociferously, not that they appear to be listening. They seem to have a mistaken case of 'our driver is fine' syndrome, which it definitely isn't ! I am furious that I can't use my new Space Explorer in any version past 2023.1.2, and that they needlessly deprecated my previous model, which was still 100% perfectly functioning, and replaced it with a version that is deeply unreliable and unstable. Appalling behaviour.

I can't use my Wacom in anything beyond like R25ish due to driver issues and I am slow as hell with a regular ol' mouse 😓

  5. Do they publish a list of bug fixes that come along with this release anywhere? I've got a few bugs that have pretty much stopped me using C4D at all (learning Blender) - Redshift is extremely unstable on M1/M2 machines but the other weird one I have is Cinema 4D freezes up my Wacom and causes the driver to hang and restart, but ONLY if Cinema 4D is open. Between those 2 things its pretty difficult to keep using it. Maxon support were aware of both bugs but had no fixes last time I reached out about a month ago.

  6. Out of all Adobe's programs After Effects feels like one of their most modern imo. But it's really held together by its amazing plugin community. I really wish Adobe would merge After Effects and Animate into one program. They add more new shit to Animate than After Effects, and Animate is a creaky old as shit program held together with gaffer tape.

Adobe probably still have me by the gonads. I can't see myself trying this new one.

I'm enjoying my sub. Come next year when I re-sub I'm going to skip / pause for one or two months to look at DaVinci Resolve and Affinity Designer for a bit, get a bit more fluid with those, then re-sub to C4D. Totally flexible and I'll be restarting with their April 2023 release under my belt (+ maybe its first bug fix). Generally I feel it's up to me when I re-sub, rather than thinking, oh jeez I better hurry up and upgrade to C4D R31 or else it'll be even pricier when R32 rolls around.

Affinity Designer I think is a good example of perpetual not working. Or at least the way they've done it (too cheap perhaps)

Their updates come out at a glacial pace. I've been wanting to bin Adobe Illustrator and move to Affinity Designer for a long time but every time I give Affinity Designer another go it's still missing too many key features. And looking at the forums it's just a hopeless lack of progress. People love it because it's cheap, but I'm happy to pay for a product if it means the devs can keep up pace on making their product the best it can be. It's frustrating, because Affinity Designer could be really really great with the way it bridges vector and raster workflows and how fast it runs. Maybe they're holding off til version 2.0 when I am assuming they'll charge again.

  8. It's kind of sucky that they didn't use the most recent version to announce the end of perpetuals so people knew from then on this would be the last, rather than just all of a sudden not have perpetuals, say basically nothing about it, and have the previous year's be the last perpetual. It's a bit of a sleazy way of doing it imo.

  9. It's hugely popular in UX/Product design. Pretty much the industry standard I think? Adobe has a shittier version of it called XD. Figma also ate Adobe's Illustrator lunch.

I wish Adobe would use some of these billions of dollars to fix their slow, broken existing software. Rebuild some of their incredibly old and chugging apps - I'm looking at you Adobe Illustrator and Animate.

  10. I have this exact problem in all versions of C4D. Even R26. Eventually the snapping will just bug out and as I am retopo-ing with the pen tool the polygon will just appear wayyyyy in front of the mesh, and once it starts to occur it won't adhere again to the mesh until a few restarts of the program, and even then, only sometimes. Sometimes I will also get it snapping to polygons behind even with Backface Culling turned on. Maddening. I thought it might be an issue with HB Modelling Bundle but it happens without too.

Me to Maxon: I was well, but now I am heartbroken. Are you saying Maxon has stopped perpetual C4D licences forever?

    Maxon to me:

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news about this for you, but as far as I am aware Maxon is moving away from perpetual licensing completely and towards subscription licensing (I’ve been told that there are no plans for a further perpetual release for C4D this year too, but I can’t speak for next year and further into the future).

That sucks. R25 was a bit of a fizzer of a release, with some good stuff in 26 and 27, so it's a shame that 25 is the last perpetual option.

  12. I got a bit tired of looking at Christian baroque and renaissance paintings when I used to go to galleries in my time in Europe but I never get sick of looking at the sculptures. Their scale and attention to detail is just amazing. I didn't think I would be as impressed by David as I was in person, having seen it so much in photos.  What amazing talent from those sculptors. Can't even fathom it.

Hi all, does anybody has a cinebench (multi core cpu)  for the new m1 ultra mac already?

    thx!

    St.

No Cinebench but in the info shared by Apple Redshift was only marginally higher on the Ultra than the Max, which seems odd. Maybe needs optimising. Surprising that they even showed that as a data point when the difference between the 2 chips was relatively minor for Redshift.

  14. I ended up cancelling my Mac Studio M1 Ultra and getting an M1 Max MBP instead. I am the worst at big financial decisions haha. Good luck with your Ultras. Looking forward to hearing how they are.

Which 3rd party apps do you use for AE? Do they need to be rewritten for M1?

I have a pretty beefy PC with a 3090 but had to use a 13 inch MacBook Pro (intel) last week when family was in town. I do mostly photoshop and after effects and I swear even on that crappy fan blasting MacBook Pro, the experience felt a lot smoother than windows. Render time was slower of course

I use a few but it's not them. I did a clean install with no plugins and the problem remained (laggy interface, particularly when marquee selecting and moving keyframes). And I have a similar experience to you, my PC is newer and more powerful than my old iMac, but running After Effects at 5K is smooth as butter on the iMac and slow and messy on Windows. It's probably a lot Adobe's fault, but strange that it doesn't affect everyone running high PPI screens.
