More and more users are switching to Blender not because of pricing, but because of what other users are accomplishing with it. In studios it's become quite normal to see Maya and Max users adopt Blender in their workflow. The community is thriving, and this is very attractive to new users as well. The attractive pricing (free) only serves to help adoption, but I think it also has to do with the simple licensing: Blender doesn't even need to be installed to run. Compare with the C4D trial: in a move to make it even more hostile to potential new users, MAXON decided to time-limit the demo/trial and put it behind a registration.

Personally, I have way more fun modeling and working in Blender now than I ever had/have in Cinema4d. And I am not alone in this... It's a very robust and quite user friendly 3d app. The tabs I really love: quick switching to sculpting or UV'ing with one click. Tabs were something I also loved in Lightwave. The viewport is an absolute joy to work in. C4D feels very clunky to me compared.

Yes, there are rough edges, as there are in any software. C4D is no exception either. The main difference at this point is that Blender is actively being improved making great strides, while C4D seems to move along at a snail's pace. But perhaps with C4D 23 a break-through will finally happen? We can but wait and see.

I believe Cinema4d is losing and/or will lose ground because of its abysmal licensing and pricing, unless MAXON changes it. Compare with Max and Maya Indie (even though it can only be used on projects worth less than 100K) for $250 a year, or Houdini, Blender: all have much more attractive pricing schemes. AutoDesk is feeling the heat, and their response to the Blender upheaval in the market is probably too little and too late. Heck, even LightWave seems to attract one or two new users that would have picked Cinema4D instead, but were rebuked by MAXON's licensing/rental plans. Especially in tough economic times like these MAXON's licensing is akin to a kick in the face when you're already down on the ground.

And exacerbating the situation is that Cinema4D users, while paying a premium upkeep, need to invest in an external particle plugin, external render engine, and other plugins and apps to keep up with the competition.  Something needs to give.

Agree 2.8 is way better than older versions. If they manage to develop it better then MAXON is screwed. Licencing is free with Blender as there is no payment.

There is not so much obnoxious threshold in 2.8 when trying stuff in Blender if user has many years with Cinema 4D.

First when you opened Blender 2.x version after Cinema 4D you felt that GUI was horse sh**.

The unpleasant factor was much higher in 2.5-2.7 versions.

I felt my eagerness to learn Blender had a bar set too high because of very bad GUI friendliness.

Open source is developed faster than Cinema 4D.

Interface may suck because there are too many options visible that you don´t need.

It is not Audi or BWM like Cinema 4D but more like Skoda.

Same stuff or even more is available but the driving is different.

Other than that Blender is still not compatible with mainstream production studios that use Cinema 4D and Vrayforc4d for their production pipeline. There is no way you can continue Cinema 4D project in Blender with all the project assets converted perfectly. Cinema 4D to Blender plugin would be as great as 3Ds max to Cinema 4D plugin. Also a great threat to MAXON as it wants to control *.c4d file format. There is already 3Dsmax to Blender available.

I was an ex-insider and I have worked as Cinema 4D specialist in finnish Cinema 4D distributor.

They do not promote Blender in any way because they work in commercial sphere.

That is what I thought when MAXON announced the "3D for the World!" but actually it's more like "3D rental for the 1st World", as it's still very expensive for other countries not on USD/EUR/GBP.

As for Blender, it is a very powerful software. It still lacks the simplicity and refininment of C4D, but it's superior in direct modelling and sculpting and GPU render (for example).

You don´t do anything with power when your sticks are all over the place. Very powerful as it was read in the Blender marketing text.

Blender has potential if it is developed into user friendly some day.

User base ignore the horrible interface and are happy because it´s free.

It was bad in 2.7 but it´s ok with current and almost useful if they remove all tabs from the top menu and change all into graphical interface. No TABS ! One has TABS in Spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel.

  3. Sorry guys but I only consider abusing Blender to find free 3d-models and use it only as exporter to Cinema 4D.

Otherwise it is much waste of time to learn many 3d-applications. Blender is good if you don´t afford to use commercial

3d-application for example in developing countries. There are amazing new Blender artists coming out from Africa for instance.

Me too, see of the features and interface choices were things I thought C4D would have come up with in some form years go. I really love the C4D interface and way of doing things over anyone else, but Blender is now a thing for me to learn and maybe not miss much in the end.

Recently I was learning Archicad 23 and did not have time to learn Blender until now.

  6. This is Easyupload animation challenge.

    1. Make a new banner video for easyupload.net

    2. Artistic idea: Show file transfer between user and cloud.

Animation needs to show a cloud and a computer.

You can use Mograph and Cinema 4D

+ you can use After Effects.

    3. Final video output is 640x480 px and 30 fps. Encoding should be MP4 without audio.

    4. How to deliver? Post a download link on this post.

Price: Winner gets full user account for one year at easyupload.net Normally package is worth 99 euros.

Here is original one currently using at site:

I finally put some time into Blender to see how the new version stacks up to C4D on a small test animation. I made everything in blender but did do a pass with some motion blur in After Effects as well. It was much easier than before to learn but that's not saying it's easy... just better than before. I have 20+ years in Cinema so it's not going to be easy to figure out by comparison. I did get something accomplished though and  that's something.

Cycles is pretty slow! I'll be using C4D and my 80+ plugins for it in the near future for most things but there is potential with Blender.

My blog post on the subject

I think there is lot of potential with Blender now for C4D users because of new interface.

    Hi guys!

My 2 cents on the topic: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMfgEuGXkAIr0tj?format=jpg&name=900x900

Besides the jokes, I think Cinema 4D is one of the greatest software that I have used and now is affordable even for my location.

When I open Blender, all the navigation and stuff make me feel I got into LADA car (it is old soviet cars)it can drive you in every place but in the most uncomfortable way,

when I use Maya, I feel like I am driving Alpha Romeo - beautiful but it breaks every 10 km.,

when I use 3Ds Max (my first 3d app) I am feeling I am in a tank - I have 2 handles for everything,

when I use Houdini...well like I am in CERN, I am accelerating particles to make a cube, and I accidentally make a hypertorus packed with monkeys, which are

consumed by the black hole that also accidentally appeared...I end up making the cube with real paper from the garbage in the post apocalypse world that I have created.

when I use Nuke - I am using BMW, cool but too expensive and in the winter you don't go out with it...

and when I use Cinema 4D - I am in a AUDI! Feels good and takes you where you want to go!

The grass is not always greener on the other side!

I feel C4D is much like BMW. Simple user interface and premium german quality.

If you have many Plugins that could be the case. On my side, I really dont use any plugin for Cinema and I didnt notice that much of a difference in stability in R21!

I did not use any plugins and run simple animated cube in viewport and it crashed. Nvidia 960M gfx card on a laptop.

With R19 there´s no problems like this.
