  1. From the album: Realism

Close up of front wheel. Modelled with Blender 2.79. Think I prefer the blue over the red.
  2. You're using N-Gons. Subdivision surface modelling works best when you maintain quads (4 sided polygons). I highly recommend the following series of modelling videos on YouTube. Work your way through all of the videos trying to follow the examples:
  3. For this sort of thing you should use proper polygon modelling. There's no need at all to use booleans in this scene.
  4. According to MAXON's product comparison page under materials the Prime version doesn't have sub-polygon displacement. This is what you need for using displacement maps. Try using a Bump map instead. Technically you can actually use displacement without sub-polygon displacement, you just need a highly sub-divided model. Usually it's not practical to sub-divide a model to the level you need for displacement to work well.
  5. Here's what I think the topic starter wants to do. It's standard nurbs modelling. I've shown a progression where I first created the splines in #1, then networked to make one corner in #2. The #3 is just #2 repeated. Done with MoI (Moment of Inspiration). This is doable in C4D using the SplinePatch plugin using a similar method I used with MoI.
  6. Probably better done in Blender using Grease Pencil. This does excellent 2D animations.

Corvette Stingray. Modelled and rendered with Blender 2.79. Have to say, I'm warming to Blender after achieving results like this.

    Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone. Already January 1 here in New Zealand :) I have a feeling 2019 is going to be a big year for Cinema 4D.
  13. If you're running the Studio version then you could do it with spline dynamics. This uses Hair. Google "Cinema 4D Spline Dynamics" for a few tutorials. I made one a long time ago: https://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/files/file/537-swinging-objects-using-spline-dynamics/
  14. Sort of makes you wonder why we still have Thinking Particles in C4D. I almost wonder if MAXON should bite the bullet and remove TP then drop the price of the Studio version and then do a deal with Insydium where when you buy the Studio version first time round you can add on X-Particles at a discounted price.
  15. I'm still using Blender 2.79 although I do have the Beta of 2.8 loaded. It's viewport display is much better than Modo's crappy "Advanced" display mode. Here's another screengrab of the Corvette. The tail is now finished. Just doing the wipers and then it's on to the wheels. What I like about Blender is the sheer quantity of deformers you can apply to a model and not have your scene grind to a halt. It's modelling tools are okay but not as good as Modo or even C4D although you do get used to the way Blender does things plus often if you're missing a modelling tool there's a plugin that can do it. Plus there are some awesome modelling plugins that do stuff neither Modo or C4D can do.
  16. Yeah they need to make purchasing less restrictive. For instance I can't buy Cinema 4D from a USA reseller as I have done for other 3D apps. I'm restricted to an Australian or New Zealand distributor.
  17. I would do it with a Boolean as well. A render boolean using the old render boolean plugin would be even better. No idea if it works with newer versions of C4D.
  18. Things will settle down after everything to do with the new core is rolled out.
  19. My understanding from my time as a Beta tester is the C4D SDK is one of the best to work with SDK's. Unless you have some actual experience using the C4D SDK then I think you're incorrect.
  20. Free educational version of Cinema 4D here: https://www.MAXON.net/en/training/educational-solutions/educational-solutions/students/ Low cost student version with a few less restrictions also available.
  21. I don't accept that. There are plenty of us hobbyists paying for our 3D software as we can afford it. What I spend on my 3D hobby is peanuts compared to my cycling hobby. Studio is way over priced in my opinion. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to supplement it with X-Particles and some other UV editing and 3D painting software. At the end of the day people should vote with their wallets and use / pay for whatever suits them. For me this is currently Modo but I'm tinkering with Blender as some things it does really well and of course it's free. It's certainly well worth keeping an eye on over the next few years. 22. Just tried it in component mode i.e. vertex, edge and polygon. You can select an element by holding the right mouse button down a bit. Not that useful I reckon. What would be more useful if things were like Modo where you select elements with the left mouse button as you do in C4D but right clicking defines where the modelling axis / action centre is.
  23. Yes. Check out the promo video. Gotta love those materials!! Course cost $60 on Gumroad. Really enjoying it.
  24. Here's what I'm working on in Blender at the moment. Have to say I'm warming to Blender but it's modelling tools are still away behind C4D and Modo. However it handles a lot of stacked modifiers (deformers) much better than either C4D or Modo. The model makes heavy use of the shrinkwrap modifier where you have a hidden high res mesh. Then on top of it you have your mesh that you cut holes out of. By shrinkwrapping the lower res sub-d mesh on to the high res mesh you maintain correct curvature, something you often lose when Sub-d modelling.
  25. Bring back the challenges. No need for prizes. Just keep the themes simple so that people can make something with say less than 10 hours work. .e.g. one only chess piece, bedside lamp, a hand tool, face mask etc. Then there's no issue if not many people enter.
