Yea I used to post there quite often, it’s quite a nice little forum, I’m not sure how busy it is traffic wise these days but always had good interactions from moderators and users there. It’s at least been around since I started learning C4D back in 2014.

it’s an interesting dilemma. I think the issue with being sponsored by any large corporation is that if they’re the ones keeping the lights, it gives them a degree of leverage over how the site is run and the content produced etc. so I can understand the reluctance to pick up a “ rival” sponsor, although the forum is open to everyone it’s still primarily C4D focused. However as you’ve pointed out, if turning down a big source of funding to stay loyal to Maxon, in turn increasing membership prices for users then I agree Maxon should be helping keep the forum afloat. I was excited to share the interview until I realised that no one else unless a member could access it. A close friend said the same thing you did, that they didn’t know of any other forums behind a pay wall. Igor and the team are in a lose lose situation. People complained about ads, so they removed them, thus losing ads revenue income, opened the forum to everyone to become more inclusive, Maxon pulled funding. The only option left is to charge a membership fee, or pay for it out of their pockets which frankly is something I’d be reluctant to do in that position or allow it to fall into obscurity which would be a massive shame. Being behind a pay wall certainly discourages new people from joining, it also stops the trolls, it’s a doubled edged sword. Ultimately much of this could be solved by Maxon making this an official c4d forum, allowing for more moderation and such to combat the troll issue. Other than c4dzone I don’t know of any other forum championing the software like we do here, Reddit is hit and miss. There so much more that could be done and developed with more funding, and the ability to have more staff behind the scenes, that would be comparable to a drop in the ocean to Maxon financially. Hopefully they’ll reconsider.

Thank you man! really appreciated !

thank you man, the Half life series is often forgotten about but it’s one of my favourites! Its easy to feel burned out from all of this, a lot of the time for every good character that emerges, there’s a bunch that didn’t turn out good or got scrapped at the beginning stages because I hated the direction it was going. character work is very much trial and error, at least for me. I’ve got a whole hard drive full of abandoned projects , or finished characters that I never released. Often times I’ll come back to some, maybe years later and I’ll be able to make it work, where as at the time for some reason I couldn’t. Most importantly try not feel discouraged. There’s always someone better out there, all you can do is maximise your skills to the best of your ability, with time and perseverance you’ll prevail. I don’t do any sketches, or really any blocking out work what so ever. I get an idea for something and just jump into it, and it unfolds from there. I’ll have a general idea of the direction I want to go in, but most of the time I really have no idea how the final character will look going into it, it sort of just develops as I go along. What I end up with can look drastically different from how it started out, but that’s the fun part of the process. I can dig some more wireframes out but here’s some from my boyz n the hood and Simpson mash up of Homer as Doughboy

Could it possibly be made a pop out menu for mobile so it’s not there all the time unless selected ?

This was a great opportunity guy, thank you so much !

Like the new colour scheme and logo, I might add though that on mobile the home page is squished, this is on an iPhone 13 Pro Max

i wouldn't be surprised if they're sinking an unreasonable amount of cash into this. The first company that pulls this off to any sort of usable degree is gonna have a licence to print money. Not necessarily purley from the 3d community, but also from people who would like to make 3d stuff but can't / won't take the time to learn how to. capitalizing on people's lazyness/and or inability.- 30 replies

i wouldn't say it's a waste of time, at least as a set of skills you can use for yourself. That being said i find it interesting with the hypocrisy surrounding ai "art", i've seen on several social media outlets authors and writers using ai to create cover art, story boards etc with absolutely no regard for traditional artists, whether 2d/digital or 3d having no problem with it, then throwing their toys out the pram when people use ai to write books, scripts and so on. i find it extremely ironic as someone who's workload has been affected by the writers strikes, as many of us have, which in part was due to concerns over studios using ai to displace certain roles as well as pay and other issues, that they can't see the wood for the trees when it comes to this topic as a whole. As if ai will stop at images and not progress to other areas. The naysayers downplaying the significance of things like this will change their tune when ai starts impeding on their given industry/hobby/past time etc. just today on reddit someone made a post asking about ai tools that can create 3d models from prompts in the 3d modelling subreddit, as if it's not a massive slap in the face to every member of that sub who's spent years learning said 3d modelling skills. i think what initially started off as somewhat of a gimmick which non of us really took seriously, in reality could change everything as we know it. it's not going away. People have legitimate concerns, and there's weight to those. It can be challenging as it is to get modelling work these days, a lot of it is farmed out to india, or countries in eastern europe. where labor is far cheaper. i have absolutely no doubt that if/when good enough results are achievable from things like this, it will certainly displace roles, Or alter them to more of a supervisory role, where you're tasked with any minor clean up that may be required. initially i thought it may have certain uses as a tool in some applications, but it's hard to invision where this would fit in without stepping on someone's toes down the line. -
i use redshift, but to be fair I could still pump that in to a shader, I’ve done it on a few occasions when I didn’t / couldn’t be bothered to unwrap it. Lmao handsome squidward ! I was gonna do him afterwards 😄

didn’t want to unwrap it, although i’d only of needed to do the head really , might go back and unwrap it, and paint some extra details around the face at the same time. Answer is it depends, for stuff like this where he doesn’t need to change, I won’t model the entire body. So for this I made the head and neck, modelled the shirt separately, then modelled the bottom half, again that’s not attached to any torso underneath and stops shortly past where the shirt covers. if I plan to change clothes or do other stuff with it, I may model the entire mesh, then use that to make the clothes with afterwards

Ideally it could most likely just atomically be put through a remesher and be good enough, automatically unwrapped and textured etc. although you’re probably right in that it might not even be needed. which ever way you spin in, iterating time and changes on the fly will be implemented way faster than any human being could do, along with the fact that it can be running all day long 24/7 , 365 with out breaks, with out the need for it to be paid etc. It’s actually kind of astonishing how quickly we’re accelerating towards this. You can almost feel the corporates rubbing their hands together in anticipation. I know there’s a lot of nay sayers down playing the significance of Ai displacing peoples jobs and such, dumping it in the same boat as all the other conspiracy theorists. But I think it’s pretty clear autonomy will change things one way or another, i honestly can’t see it stopping at just being a tool to aid people. -

This is cool, although it’s pretty overwhelming how quickly this type of technology is progressing. It I’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for text based prompts to 3d to become useable with out considerable clean up by a human. with the ability to iterate on designs almost instantly, with clean results and minimal human involvement it I’ll be a massive turning point going forward.
