  1. Blimey what a struggle ! Just like to thank you all again as I think I got there in the end. I stayed with the displacement route and have 3 different deformers blended together with different heights and falloffs etc. Moving them off centre from each other also creates endless possibilities so Im happy with that aspect. Jops wave file was really useful in the end ( thanks Jop ), I scaled down the noise and rendered out two frames from the animation to use as Disp maps, mixed in with more regular blurred versions. I did go down the rabbit hole somewhat chasing the artefacts you can see on the grab below, I kept turning up the poly count till my machine died but then realised my polys were tiny in comparison to the marks. After much investigation it turned out to be a blur that I had put on one of the maps in Cinema, in the blur / offset part of the shader, it was only 2% but did all that damage, as soon as I dropped that and did the blur in pshop it was fine. Think I can come right back on the poly count now. Its actually for a bottle shot and Ive camera mapped a still onto rough bottle model to create the reflection, cant show it at the mo tho, even tho its only a test job. I feel nap coming on. Cheers all Deck

  4. That's not entirely correct. They used a light rig in a cloud tank: white paint injected into a big glass tank of water that has two different densities to create an inversion layer for the paint to float on forming the underside of the cloud. The light rig of alternating red/yellow/orange lights was all they could do to create the fire effect. It was onto that high-speed footage of the cloud tank that they then comped the ship. Some digital manipulation via compositing masks were required to get the clouds to peel back as the ship passed through the cloud but there were no CG clouds in that shot. The most digital work they had to do was clone sections of the cloud tank footage wherever the light rig was poking through. That is why the reveal shot is shot wide and from a distance as getting closer would probably show that the water tank paint clouds were grossly out of scale. Notice also that it was a quick shot. Honestly, I think it would have been more dramatic if the ship burst through in a tight shot right above the buildings and then rumbled so close overhead that you think it is going to hit the buildings. Only when it doesn't hit the buildings that you realize just how gigantic that ship really is. Well, that is the feeling I am going for anyway. Dave P.S. My reference on how they did that shot is from Cinefex Issue 67 (page 68). I remembered how they did but looked it up to make sure my facts were correct.

  8. The neat free web app, created by industrial designer – and former Weta Workshop senior 3D modeller – Jorge Valle lets you create custom checker maps, and download them at up to 8K resolution for free. UV Checker Map Maker lets you customise pretty much any aspect of a checker map, including the size of the grid and microgrid, the numbering convention (letters and numbers or coordinates), and the colours. Settings are controlled via radio buttons or on-screen sliders, and there are nice usability options like the one to have the colour of the text change automatically with that of the background for maximum legibility. Once created, you can download the checker map at resolutions between 1,024 x 1,024px and 8,192 x 8,192px in PNG format. http://uvchecker.byvalle.com/

  9. Famous Cornelius Dammrich has completed recording the process of his latest artwork. Much of what you can see in this short film was broadcasted live on Twitch. It shows his interpretation of Bobs workplace plus additional pieces that highlight the sticky and moldy nature of his business. Everything’s been touched before, nothing is new. Mint condition, but not really. His last recorded work with C4D R18 of 6088AD was a hallmark for his career. Now this 64-part streaming that started 4 months ago has come to a conclusion with a short video filled with colors, emotions and detail. C4D S24, Octane
