  1. What's new in Cinema 4D 2024 New in 2024.0 Redshift is now the default renderer in Cinema 4D. Innovations in the simulation systems Another component of the simulation system: the new Rigid Bodies. Many characteristic spline rope parameters such as Strechiness, Friction, etc. can be defined by a Vertex Map at the point level. A specific graphics card can be selected for simulation calculation. Innovations in the Pyro simulation A Pyro emitter can now also use particles, points and MoGraph matrices. The emission volume of Pyro can be automatically faded out at the edges. Low-resolution Pyro caches can be subsequently subdivided more finely and distorted with noises. Any simulation image of the Pyro simulation can be defined as an initial state. The initial state of a Pyro simulation can be controlled individually for each property via volume objects. The colors of a Pyro simulation can be assigned with temporal falloff and smoothing. The fuel of a Pyro simulation can be assigned buoyancy. Pyro turbulence is smoothed by default. The calculation of Pyro velocities can be limited to areas of simulated density and temperature to save memory. Multiple Pyro caches can be managed simultaneously in one simulation and easily switched. Modeling innovations The Projection Deformer projects geometry onto any object. Selections can be repeated at will with the Pattern Selection. Subdivision Surfaces have a new mode Linear Pre-Subdivision. Brush/Magnet have a new mode Surface Smear. Point and polygon numbers can now be displayed in the viewports. Innovations with vertex normals The Normal Editing Manager can be used to edit vertex normals. The Vertex Map manager VAMP can now also transfer Vertex Colors and surface normals. The Phong tag can take polygon areas and angles into account during automatic vertex normal generation. Pose Morph can now morph vertex normal directions. New features for Nodes and Assets Note Nodes allow comments to be written directly into the Node Editor and to be customized in size and color. Scaffolds allow you to highlight sections of a Node setup with a colored background. The Break Spline Modifier Asset provides several methods for dividing splines into individual segments. The Electric Spline Modifier Asset can be used to calculate flashes and spline bundles. The Connect Node combines any number of single geometries and geometry arrays into a single geometry. The Generate Tangent Node can calculate a pair of tangents for controlling spline curves. The Create normals if missing Node automatically calculates Phong normals for a mesh geometry. The Modulo Selection Node provides new options for inverting and saving the selection. There are also new options for saving selections at these Selection Nodes: Select Facing, Select Bounding Box, Noise Selection, Non-Manifold and Random Selection. The Not Node inverts Boolean signals. The Clone onto Points Node duplicates any geometry onto the points of another geometry. The Explode Mesh Islands Node splits polygon islands and outputs them as separate mesh geometry. The Explode Spline Segments Node splits all spline segments and outputs them as separate spline geometry. The Transform Geometry Node is the further development of the Transform Element Node and has been accelerated in processing by orders of magnitude. Inputs and outputs to Assets and groups can be integrated directly into the setup as Nodes. Miscellaneous innovations The Align to Spline tag has some new options and can overshoot tangentially at the spline start/end. New VAMP calculation method can take UV islands into account. When Cinema 4D is started for the first time, the language of the operating system is now used.

  2. These are the kind of comments that I honestly don't understand. Have you even tried the release for a minute? The performance gain is something the whole community has been asking for for the last 10 years and now almost every use case benefits from it. Finally the new core shines through... and your conclusion is "nothing groundbreaking"? I also don't know how one could come to the conclusion that Maxon concentrates more on ZBrush than Cinema. C4D just got a massive update in this fall release, ZBrush didn't.

  3. From my tests the 3D editor is on average 3x faster than 2023. It ranges from 1.5x faster to... well it can be stupidly faster, it depends which features you're using, but Ive seen some projects hit 10x faster frame rates.

  4. Here is the most extreme performance gain that I found during testing: 1 fps in 2023 vs. 49 fps in 2024! This is not the usual performance boost and certainly a crazy example, but there is a noticable speed increase in almost every scene. 2024performance.mp4

  5. If my calculations are correct C4D will reach the functional capabilities of Houdini minus the fluid and granular simulations in September 2025.

The documentation has been resolved and the first thing I see is this : Should be stated as "default option" otherwise someone will assume RS is part of C4D I think the features with most impact in daily use are the following : Unified Dynamics System Viewport optimization (from what I understood so far the optimizations concern clones and material previews) Index Display Projection Deformer (asked for that 1 year ago - OK now I know how long it gets for a feature of this complexity to get developed) Linear Pre-Subdivision (can steal some usage from the Remesh) Break Spline Modifier (MAXON ONE only) (this can be used as a substitute to stack symmetric instances in grid mode with the help of the Spline Wrap Deformer) Surface Smear Vertex Map Transfer to other mesh Spline Symmetry with Remove Outside Pattern Selection (would be more useful is it was a Capsule) I think the Overshoot of the align to spline was possible using MoSpline The Explode Mesh and Explode Splines is just the equivalent of Voronoi without source points and PolyFX. Clone onto Points node ... I thought that was already a thing... Surprised to find out there was no node for inverting a bool value... I hope that resolves the Thicken and capsules that messed with normals ... Pyro and particles was already possible by using proxy geometry but the update is welcomed assuming it didn't spent much time for development. Overall : 6/10 and to be honest I don't see me sending any new suggestions concerning these new features (which is good) so 122 minus 1 suggestions for next time because they caught up with the Symmetry-Spline one One reasonable question is: why the heck aren't all those nodes posted in Core4D from people working in Maxon don't make it to C4D ?

  7. 2024 First Impressions Well i ran a few performance tests wich includes a cloner with a 100x100 grid geometric cubes (no instancing) and plus a few deformers over it and a subdiv. Also a modelling performance test with a cube inside the sculpting mode, and over 6 000 000 polys. The performance results were mixed: In the first test, the cloner performed well even with the deformers inlfuence but it fell with the sub div. It was like 1fps in the end. However it was more than twice as fast of the 2023 version that ran at 0.3fps. good job Maxon! The second test was an Alembic file of the merged geometry of the same cloner. Then the deformers and in the end the subdiv. The performance was a bit faster due to the ABC cache but in the end it was only 2fps. However there was no diference to the 2023 version wich means the abc stream was not affected by this update. no news here! The third test was a modelling one with a heavy geometry and the sculpt tool. The subject was a cube subdivided to more than 6000000 polys wich isa good round number for a detailed sculpt. Now this test was TERRIBLE. The viewport performance in orbiting is ok but as as soon as you interact with a brush to sculpt, the performance is extremely bad. You can't use the brush smoothly and it becomes unpractical to use. The 2023 version is way smoother and even at 25 000 000 polys is better than the 2024 version. i hope this is some problem fixed with a new release. bad job Maxon!!! I didnt test anything else yet so i really dont know how powerfull are the other upgrades. Besides the simulation tools plus the nodes (wich i really don't use often) this version is been a real disapointment. The linear displacement seems kinda pointless, the align to spline extra features are almost useless and the normal extra tools are ok but there were was already an old plugin called Vertex Normal tool, that could do that job. The viewport index features are a good tool, however i noticied a little bug in the point index. I'll try the modelling features later and i really hope they change my mind. i was rooting for some animation/rigging features but i guess i'll have to wait. cheers

  8. If I ask you to go to the supermarket and give you a list of 100 items to put in your trolley, it might take you 20 minutes to finish the shop. If I give you the list but tell you you're only allowed to use the hand baskets and have to checkout each basket one by one, it will take you longer. If the shop has trolleys (24gb gpu) then it makes sense to use the larger more efficient capacity, but if they only have baskets (8gb gpu) then you're stuck doing the task bit by bit. tip: for octane users, this is what 'parallel samples' does. If you have spare vram, crank it to 32

  12. I think that depends of each one point of view. For example, im a rigger and an animator. I use xpresso a lot, skin deformers and character features. I welcome a lot the new vamp features and the viewport performance but i feel c4d needs a lot more for this area, like a more advanced xpresso, animation layers, vertex weight layers, dual quartenion algorythms and much more. Other artists will require different features. In the end , i feel a little frustrated with this version because it lacks the tools i need. However its still the software i like the most, the one i work with everyday and i hope it gets better by the time. Thats why i like to point out the issues and the good features. Cheers

  13. Very glad to be able to talk about new things here at last. It's a VERY good release in my book... Modelling department Subdivision Surface - now with linear pre-subdivision Normal Editing and proper control over normals (at last) Square weighted Phong shading / rendering Speed improvements are fairly huge for modelling too - deformers etc are no longer single thread. Pattern Select gives us very helpful new selection mode VAMP transfer of normals and UVs (for VB meshes) New Backdrop Primitive Brush tool improvements / New Modes (surface smear / preserve boundaries) and that's just in the modelling department. This release makes me very happy there. And of course in the simulation department things got pretty good too, with Rigid Bodies joining the fully unified simulation system. CBR

  14. The density of a volumetric object is linked to its material. You can change the look of it by changing the opacity (and sometimes even SSS).   16. I expected more modeling features not simulation stuff.... The unified rigid body system, faster viewport and Index display are definitely a plus and shine the most compared to the rest of features. The documentation hasn't been updated yet but found a nice 404 animation... I didn't notice anything about ZBrush .... I'm not following ZBrush, maybe there was an update earlier and doesn't follow the rest of MAXONS app update releases.

  17. Kind of surprised to see R2024 not announced on the main Core4D page. Did I miss it? .....well...with the expansion to Houdini and Blender threads on the site and the loss of "C4D" in the sites title, I guess Maxon releases are not big news anymore. Even though I understand why...it is kind of sad actually. Dave
